Relocating, moving and mobilizing patients are integral parts of a nurse’s daily work. Anyone who works in nursing or elderly care knows that this is bone work in the truest sense of the word. That’s why many caregivers suffer from back problems. The reasons for this are the frequent lifting of heavy loads – often in a forward bent posture – and the lack of technical aids in the often stressful work routine.
In our series „Ergonomic work in nursing professions“ we deal with the ergonomic execution of basic movements from the daily nursing routine. Today it is about the repositioning from the sitting to the lying position with the help of the back handle:
Preparation of the resident
• The resident sits on the edge of the bed
• His hands are on his thighs
Preparation for nursing staff

• The legs are offset – the front leg supports the resident’s thigh
• With the arm nearer the bed the nursing staff grasps the resident by his back
• The other hand lies laterally on the resident’s knee
Moving the resident

• The upper body is pulled slightly towards the mattress
• The legs are pressed onto the bed
