Checklist for a safe environment for senior citizens
In Germany up to five million people fall every year, which is why fall prevention is particularly important. The people most frequently affected are older people over 65 years of age. Those who are also female, immobile and inactive and have a physical disability are particularly at risk. Anyone who wants to prevent falls and injuries must keep physically fit and avoid sources of falls in everyday life. Osteoporosis, muscle atrophy, low blood pressure and poor eyesight are further risk factors. Falls can have serious consequences. Then they cause further immobility, cause anxiety and insecurity. This in turn leads to further falls and the person concerned is already in a vicious circle.
To avoid sources of danger, you should know risk factors and if possible eliminate them in your environment. You can find more information on fall prevention in the brochure of the Mediclin Clinics:
– Prophylaxis against falls starts with getting up in the morning. A bed appropriate to the physical condition helps to start the day safely. It should be height-adjustable so that the feet can touch the floor when sitting. Handles and brackets help to shift the body weight to one side and maintain balance.
– Check your medication. Many pills impair the senses, make you dizzy or weak. Maybe you can swap your medicine for a similar preparation.
– Do regular balance training and muscle building exercises. A fit body does not fall so easily and if it does, the muscles help prevent serious injuries.
– Eliminate stumbling blocks in the house. Pay attention to carpet edges, cables and thresholds.
– Ensure good lighting, especially on stairs.
– Additional handrails and handles in the bathroom and at the transition to the next floor provide additional safety.
– Fall arrest mats and fall protection clothing can cushion falls in the house and protect knees and hips.
– Ensure that furniture stands securely. This allows you to hold on to them or pull yourself up if necessary.
– Non-slip mats in the bathtub and shower prevent slipping. A bathtub lift makes it easier to get up after a bath.
– Check your personal fall risk, for example, with the checklist of the German Senior Citizens‘ League.
