Raising a seated resident without support

Back pain and other physical ailments in caregivers are usually by a combination of poor work postures and movements, misuse of aids, patient care and other working conditions.

But these strains can be avoided or at least reduced by minimizing the risk factors. In our blog series we give tips and suggestions for the ergonomic implementation of daily care operations. Today: Raising a seated resident without support:

Preparation for nursing staff

• The resident’s feet are placed close to the chair
• The nursing staff takes a firm, slightly offset position – with his knees lightly compressing the patient’s legs
• A towel is placed around the resident’s back and grasped as closely as possible with both hands

Raising the resident

• The nursing staff shifts his body weight backwards
• If the resident’s buttocks rise, the nursing staff pushes his knees forward until the resident can continue to sit back on the seat
