Raising a seated resident

Many nurses suffer from back pain. These result, among other things, from the fact that many care routines are done in front bent position. This physical exertion creates a considerable burden on the back. If, for example, 20 kg are lifted out of a stooped posture, this corresponds to an approximately 8 times higher load on the intervertebral disc with corresponding risks of back injury.

In our blog series „Ergonomic work in nursing professions“, it is about the corresponding optimization of important steps in the care which can be reduced loads. Today we deal with raising a seated resident:

Preparation for nursing staff

• A towel is positioned under the resident’s thighs
• The nursing staff stands behind the chair – his feet are located close to the chair

Raising the resident

• The resident’s upper body is pushed slightly forward
• The nursing staff grabs the towel with both hands and shifts his body weight backwards – the arms remain stretched out for the whole time
