How to set up a nursing room perfectly (Part 2)

In order to make a nursing home comfortable it sometimes requires the initiative of relatives. For more tips on setting up, we have put together in the second part of our blog post:

Perfect position: The centerpiece of every nursing room is the nursing bed, which should be accessible from left and right. Winkler knows: „Low-floor chains are today well-manageable, with electrically adjustable head and foot sections.“ The frame and technology are mostly made of metal, and older homeowners increasingly buy models whose attachments are made of wood. This looks warmer and thus more comfortable. When setting up the room, relatives and future residents should be careful to place the bed in the direction of the window. Or in parallel. „Often this position is ideal for the residents, because they have the door and windows in view,“ explains Winkler. In addition, books, magazines and newspapers should be within easy reach of the bed and screw a reading lamp on the nursing bed.

Living like at home: Because especially older people reluctantly move – we know the saying „you do not transplant an old tree“ – it helps if the new home is similar to the old. A tip is to photograph the living room or kitchen wall in the old home, then place pictures and decoration in the nursing room as well. The familiar view of the usual view provides security, making it easier to get used to the new home. Important to know: People with severe advanced dementia often do not recognize each other on current photos – here, pictures from „old times“ are usually better. It is also possible that the well-meaning mirror fears fears, as suddenly „foreign people“ appear. In addition, relatives should negotiate whether you may bring individual furniture to the retirement home. An armchair or a small bench, the familiar floor lamp or the cupboard from the hallway of the old apartment also ensure that people in need of care get used to the new environment more quickly. Many houses already offer this service today, especially in assisted living. Radio and television should basically be present in every room. Even if these are no longer important for the resident, this gives the impression of being connected to the outside world.

Green pleasure: What applies to furniture, also applies to plants. If the mother had a favorite Benjamini, he should move to the nursing room. But in contrast to brought pictures or lamps, so dead objects, living plants must not be in the rooms in all houses. „This has hygienic reasons because mold spores may form in the soil, which can be dangerous for specific diseases,“ says Winkler. And some want to avoid houses, because these can burden the health of the residents. Nevertheless, it is worthwhile to address the home management. Because who has a green thumb, wants to use this also in the retirement home.

To roar: wall tattoos. Suppliers of large-scale wall tattoos have adapted to the target group of seniors. Common motifs are tree trunks, silhouettes of foxes, birds and deer as well as deer motifs, often as a rutting cry variant. What may sound cheesy, may look iconic. Prerequisite: The motifs are laid out generously and matched to the furniture before. A clock and a calendar with large letters must not be missing in any nursing home. But not to fall back on a traditional station clock, a wall tattoo tree can be combined with a clockwork. „Très Chic“, also finds Winkler.
