fall prevention

Once upon a time …

…a nursing bed and a hospital bed that once only offered lying comfort. Today they spoil their residents like luxury beds that are familiar from wellness hotels.

Until the First World War the idea existed that a hospital bed had to remain unused for a while from a hygiene point of view. But already in the post-war period the tide turned with the drastic increase in bed occupancy, as Alfons Labisch and Reinhard Spree impressively described in their book „Einem jeden Kranken in einem Hospitale seine eigenes Bett“ (Every patient in a hospital has his own bed) in 1996.

Today, German nursing and hospital beds meet the highest hygienic standards. They are designed in such a way that they not only help to minimize falls during sleep, but also when getting up, and at the same time take into account the right to refrain from measures involving deprivation of liberty. Systematic fall prevention plays a central role, especially in nursing care for the elderly, since almost a third of those over 64 fall at least once a year and this percentage continues to rise among the elderly. For example, wissner-bosserhoff has developed various solutions to prevent falls in the long term:

On the one hand, the height of the bed plays a role. Beds with a large adjustable height range of 27-80 cm score here. With the low nursing beds from the sentida series, the company is consistently pursuing measures to protect residents. All low nursing beds from the sentida series and also the hospital bed image 3 are equipped with the intelligent 3-stop strategy. This has a height adjustability of 27 cm for a safe sleeping position, 41 cm for the ergonomic bed exit at chair height and 80 cm for a comfortable and back-friendly care position for the nursing staff.
The side guard also plays a central role in preventing falls. All care beds from wissner-bosserhoff feature fall prevention during the sleep phase as standard. In the uppermost pull-out step of the bed rail, both parts of the side guard are so tightly sealed that they are just as safe as a continuous side rail and go beyond the IEC 60601-2-52 standard. The patented SafeFree® side guard follows the recommendation of the expert standard for fall prophylaxis, does not represent a measure involving deprivation of liberty in principle when used on one side in accordance with the classification of the Werdenfelser-Weg and has also proven itself as a stand-up aid and to promote the mobility of the occupant.
In addition, intelligent assistance systems are now available that illuminate the room and virtually light the way for the occupant. An automatic night light shows the resident the way, even when going to the toilet at night. SafeSense® from wissner-bosserhoff, for example, is such a revolutionary solution. At night in particular, the Bed Exit Assistance System can help to reduce measures involving deprivation of liberty and is therefore recommended as a measure to preserve liberty.
The sick – and the carers – hardly imagined all this in their wildest dreams of the past.
