Obesity in the nursing home

Overweight is the most common cause of malnutrition in the Western world. The yardstick for the approximate assessment of body weight is the body mass index, which the World Health Organization has named. If a value of at least 30 kg/m² is present, this means obesity.

The disease obesity can lead to stress on the cardiovascular system and increase the risk of strokes and cardiovascular diseases, such as high blood pressure. Rapid fatigue and increased risk of decubitus ulcers, i.e. local damage to the skin due to pressure in the form of pressure sores, can be the result of the disease. In addition, the obesity leads to an enormous restriction of the affected person.

High proportion of obesity in seniors

For seniors over 70 years, the proportion of overweight people is around 80%, which means that the proportion of obese people in need of care worldwide is steadily rising. Nursing home personnel therefore have a special care and treatment requirement for obese nursing home residents, but faces the problem of implementation, as aids (beds and wheelchairs adapted to the weight) and additional auxiliary staff (e.g. for resettling residents) are missing.

This is where the carisma 300-xxl comes into play. A nursing bed, which was specially manufactured for obese residents and should facilitate the everyday care for residents and nurses. During the development, the synthesis of cosiness and individual nursing comfort was the focus and complemented with functionalities such as an extra-wide XXL lying surface. The bed is 120 cm wide and thus ensures that the occupant above average space and freedom of movement is given. This does not cause pressure points on the extremities. The nurses also find enough space for rearrangement, mobilization and proper positioning of the residents and get the opportunity to back-friendly and ergonomic work. In addition, the nursing bed provides a safe working load of 300 kg, with a resident weight of 270 kg and with a lying surface height of only 37 cm ensures easy mobilization of the resident out of bed.
