It should be the most important meal of the day – breakfast. Again and again, scientists and studies have shown that a well-balanced diet in the morning significantly improves our performance. But what does balanced breakfast actually mean? And what are the most common breakfast habits ? We would like to deal with these questions in today’s blog post.
Almost 30 percent of respondents do not eat breakfast in the morning. This result was confirmed by a recent YouGov study on the daily breakfast ingredients in Germany. However, it is particularly noticeable in this study that the habits depend heavily on the different age groups of the respondents. Thus, the youngest and the oldest age groups have the lowest proportion of „non-breakfasters“ (18 to 24 years: 8 percent, 55 years and older: 7 percent). The proportion of 25 to 54 year olds is 12 percent. Many respondents in this age group cite lack of time as a reason.
Coffee and bread products are the classics
For many Germans coffee is the absolute must-have on the breakfast table. One in two respondents say they consume coffee in the morning. The bread products follow a little further away. While bread rolls are preferred by 31 percent, 29 percent prefer bread. Butter and cheese, at 31 and 32 percent, are the most popular, followed closely by sausage at 27 percent. But here, too, the habits in different age groups are different. The youngest age group often drinks tea rather than coffee, and bread rolls or bread are not as popular as cornflakes or cereals.
What is a balanced breakfast?
We have already clarified what the components and classic of the daily breakfast in Germany are. But is this breakfast healthy and balanced enough to provide the energy needed for the day? As mentioned above, 50 percent drink coffee almost daily for breakfast. But this is not the optimal solution according to experts. Much healthier would be herbal / fruit tea or juice spritzer. Because this gives the body in addition to the necessary fluid and the first vitamins a day.
In order to be able to retrieve the available energy in the body as best as possible, it is recommended to have carbohydrates, such as wholemeal bread or cereal for breakfast. In addition, fruit should not be missing in a balanced breakfast to take more vitamins. Milk, yogurt or cheese are important sources of protein and make the breakfast balanced and complete.
